First Guided Hike of Spring 2025!
The Northern California Regional Land Trust is excited to welcome the public to the Deer Creek Preserve to enjoy spring bloom as part of the Take a Hike event series. Led by Land Trust Staff, this hike will start from the trailhead on Highway 32 and follow Deer Creek downstream into the canyon. We will follow the water to the fish ladder within the preserve before returning on the same route. Phenology is the study of seasonal change so we will be looking at how the land is waking up from its winter slumber and enjoying all the new life of spring! This will be the general theme of the hike, but we’ll also observe the stunning geological formations of the area and learn about the importance of the Deer Creek Preserve as critical wildlife habitat and a future wildfire buffer.
The Deer Creek Trailhead is 40 miles from Downtown Chico. We will meet at the trailhead at 9AM so enough time for travel. Detailed directions will be sent out upon registration. The end time of 12:30PM is tentative, participants can stay longer or leave early as they please.
This is a moderate hike of three to four miles, depending on participant interest. Supportive footwear, light clothing layers, sunscreen, a hat, and ample water and snacks are recommended.
Registration is free but required to participate. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to support future educational events like this one, and the conservation of open spaces and wild places across Northern California.
